Round 13 "Ironman" |
|
|
|
Rolling into the final round of the 2008 GNCC
season at the Ironman, many racers would be still
looking to clinch their class championships after
year long battles. As the rain had every one primed
for another wet round, the carnival atmosphere
provided by the demo rides, monster truck show
and the incredible number of spectators, the racers
would get to have their last race of the season
play out at what many feel is the best round of
the year.
|
|
It
appears the rain and cold weather actually
attracted more spectators out to the
Ironman than ever this year with nothing
else to do than watch some intense racing
action along with a cool Monster Truck
Demo on Saturday and Sunday

For the XC2 class, Donald Ockerman had clinched
the class championship and would run the remaining
2 rounds in the XC1 class. This opened the door
for Mark Nottman and Josh Kirkland to battle
out the race as they competed for the 2nd place
point’s position. Kirkland would come
on strong in the final two rounds claiming victory,
but Mark Notman remained hot on his heels in
the 2nd spot, which was more than enough to
secure the runners-up spot in points followed
by Kirkland just 11 points behind in third.

Thomas Wright
wrapped up the 40+ Championship early,
and made the move to the Pro Class at
the Ironman for a new challenge
|
Senior A 40+ racer, Thomas Wright, had been battling
with Dave Simmons all season long, until Simmons
was injured in a local race which set him out
for the remaining two rounds. The championship
would fall to Wright and allowed him the chance
to move up, which he did at the Ironman to the
XC1 Pro class. Unfortunately, Wright lost his
front brakes a few miles into the race and eventually
the wheel bearing failed, which dropped him out
the race.
College A racer Parker Jones would put in a
valiant efforts this season, wrapping up the
class championship and we would see him make
the move to the XC2 class at this round. Jones
went on to finish 24th in XC2 and should be
able to compete in XC2 in 2009 as a contender
in the points chase. Other close races this
season find us looking at the Vet 30+ class,
where Mike Husband and Jeff Miller would also
see a close season. Miller walked away from
the season with more wins, but it would be Husband
claiming the class championship. College B would
be yet another class where mere points separated
the top riders. Jamie Bithell would do his best
and come up just a few points shy of taking
the crown, which went to Josh Konocheck. With
so many classes heading to the final round,
its no wonder many feel this is one of the most
intense races of the year.

Andy

to move him into 3rd place in points
