San Felipe, Mexico (3/6/2014) - SCORE Class 19 (Pro UTV Class) is definitely here to stay, as many classes were considerably smaller at this years San Felipe 250. The Pro UTV class had 14 entries, and all of them meant business. I personally spent the last few months building a Polaris XP1000 for this race as well. Running out of time, I scrapped it for the SCORE BAJA 500 and drove down to chase for the TireBlocks team instead.

The TireBlocks team of Jamie Kirkpatrick & Kenny Sanford piloted their brand new Polaris RZR XP 1000 for the first time at the SCORE San Felipe 250

Massive confusion and course changes during the ATV/Motorcycle start led to the truck start getting pushed back until 12:30. We just finished chasing for our ATV friends in time to jump in our Polaris RZR XP 4 1000 chase vehicle for the UTV race. As the vehicles were leaving the line, we headed out the Zoo Road to reach the first pit at RM40 Morelia Junction. The Zoo Rd. was absolute madness with nonstop traffic heading toward you. With thousands of fans leaving Zoo Rd after watching the Trophy Trucks pass by, it was definitely a more of a dangerous drive than racing on the course. We had to literally jump off into the desert multiple time to avoid head-ons.

Arriving at Morelia Junction with a fresh change of skivvies in order, we were ready to see how the race was progressing. The first UTV to RM40 was Matt Parks in his new Jagged X Polaris XP1000. To our surprise was the next level looking GlazzKraft Polaris XP 900 in a very close second. These guys were flying and there car looked to be working very well. The Murray Bros. Maverick was 3rd and Jamie Kirkpatrick was right on his tail in fourth. Jamie and Kenney Sanford from TireBlocks had built this as there first attempt at UTV racing. Neither one of them had ever driven a Polaris RZR, as the car was literally built and rolled straight into the trailer for the race. Apparently San Felipe was as good a break in spot.

TireBlocks RZR XP 1000
To much surprise, the TireBlocks team were off to a great start running in fourth

We jumped in the Polaris XP RZR XP 4 1000, bombed a short ways down the course and hit an access road that paralleled the race course for the next 2O miles. Along the way we saw the Murray Maverick sidelined with mechanical issues. There issue turned out to be a loose injector wire that were able to diagnose, fix, and get back in the race. Our back road out of there was a way better option than going back out the Zoo Road and it put us headed toward San Matias for the next pit. The box van was waiting for the TireBlocks team in San Matias and they were already fueling the tank by the time we got there to help.

The slick looking GlazzKraft RZR team was also a front runner in the San Felipe 250

We installed the light bar and they took off into the wet and rainy Mikes Loop in a very respectable third place. The Jagged X and GlazzKraft cars were about 4 minutes ahead and having a great battle between the two. We pushed on as Mark Behnke passed by in his XP1000 a few minutes behind the TireBlocks RZR. We got to Valle T with just enough time to wolf down a few tacos before the UTVs started showing up. Jagged X, GlazzKraft, and the TireBlocks car all came by within about three minutes of each other. The rookies were actually closing the gap a little at a time.

We jumped in the chase RZR, freezing our butts off in the rain and wind. We passed the TireBlocks and GlazzKraft cars on the highway as they are only allowed to run 60 mph. When we got to Borrego the Jagged X was having a long pit and the TireBlocks and GlazzKraft cars were only about 45 seconds apart on the pavement. As the GlazzKraft car showed up, the Jagged X RZR ripped back out onto the course just in front of them. This made for the top three cars running all within a minutes gap into the new section. We drove around to the next pit in Chinero to see who would show up with the lead.
