Ok, lets try something new for ’06. Let’s
replace the term “sick” when describing something;
epic (ep’ik) – adj. of or like an epic;
heroic; grand; amazing; unbelievable; likeness to the
Fallout Volume One
Epic is the only suitable one-word explanation for
the new film tilted: Fallout Volume One. Simply put
this video contains the most amazing ATV stunt work
ever to be captured on film. It’s hard to believe
that this is the debut film for the Akraix gang! The
angles and edit work displayed throughout the feature
are able to compete with other videos already on the
market, however I have more to say about the issues
surrounding the Akraix team’s maiden voyage later
on.
The video is an all-out freeriding affair with a freestyle
flavor that takes place in locations that some of us
only dream of visiting. Also featured is a squadron
of riders that all seem to have escaped from their local
insane asylums. You couldn’t even pay someone
to attempt even the weakest mid-air break-dance portrayed
in this film (the weakest is probably the plain old
back-flip)…Wait, did I just use “plain old”
when describing a back-flip, Oh yeah I forgot I just
watched the Fallout and am no longer impressed with
old tricks like the b-flip, I guess it’s kind
of like when you eat a steak and cheese from the famous
Pat’s in Philadelphia and afterwards you never
consider touching a home-made minute steak again.
If you’re like me, after watching the teaser
online, the delayed release was like waiting for a plus
or minus to show up on a home-pregnancy test….well
almost just like it. This video was well worth the wait
and I ask, if the Akraix fellows are reading, DON’T
DO THAT AGAIN! Especially this time of year when going
out and throwing snowballs at the jerk’s car that’s
always parking in your spot is the highlight of your
day. Well it’s finally out and available for your
own viewing pleasure, and I’m already watched
it four times and have no intention of putting it on
the shelf anytime soon.

Akraix
intial film contains plenty of Freestyle/Free-riding,
but they definitely keep it interesting by providing
some unusual twist, like attempting a backflip
into a pond along with some freestyle action side
by side with snowmobiles to dirt in Minnesota.

To compare the Fallout with the recently released Huevos
8 would be unfair. First of all, Wes Miller’s
Huevos series traditionally covers multiple ATV disciplines
where the Fallout only features freeriding. Second,
Wes and his team are considered the pioneers of the
ATV film industry and their experience speaks for itself
when it comes to diversity and film quality, when on
the other hand this is Akraix’s first crack at
it. And even though I said earlier it’s hard to
pick up on the fact that this is their first video,
the freshman status shows when compared to the cinematography
seen in H-8. But if you don’t care if ATV videos
are filmed with a Handycam or in Panavision than it
will be a photo finish on which film you like better.
Like I said, the Fallout is all freeriding and freestyle
and H-8 is a salad of disciplines, it all comes down
to your brand of vodka, or Hi-C for our younger readers.
On a sad and touchy note, this is the last appearance
of Kelly Chang in a video. We lost Kelly earlier last
year back in June. He was a huge influence and regarded
by many as a role model. Kelly left a huge void in the
ATV world when he left us and will not be soon forgotten.
This film pays tribute to his legacy and I am sure all
the other riders are honored to be part of his last
hoo-ra. Known as a caring and giving person, Kelly was
always inviting people to come and ride on his tropical
wonderland of an MX track in Hawaii. I never got the
chance to meet him myself, but bring him up among people
who have and they will go on and on about his top-notch
persona and dedication to the sport. Ride In Peace Kelly.
The Fallout utilizes every inch of your television
screen with never-ending quad awesomeness. Packed into
the film is a great crash section that shows the aftermath
of a helicopter freestyle session gone wrong (that’s
right, the helicopter was doing tricks) and some of
the worst injuries I’ve ever seen in on film.
Also you get to meet a stately fellow named Jerod that
shows up from time to time to offer possum pie recipes.
There is a little deviation from f-style when Andy Lagzdins,
Harlen Foley and Chuck Glacken show you how to “git-r-dun”
in the woods of Maryland (I hated writing that phrase
but you know what I mean by it). And last but not blah
blah blah, there is a really cool learning experience
that the riders undertake in Travis Pastran’s
foam pit that will leave some of you draining your pools
and buying carpet padding in large quantities.

The
Fallout isn’t just a high flying action
film as there are also some intense woods riding
action along with some other crazy water hovering
maneuvers

The Fallout Volume One delivers on all of it’s
promises and makes me excited to see what the now experienced
team will have to offer in the future. The lesser than
THX and DTS quality of film is not enough to turn your
stomach and after a couple of thousand of copies are
sold I’m sure upgrades will be purchased and implemented
in subsequent time. I highly recommend this film to
anyone I talk to and you will do the same after being
infected with the Fallout.
Pros: Benchmark-setting freestyle
content accompanied with a great soundtrack.
Cons: Home-videoish quality at times
and the helicopter crash is absent form the footage.
