Another feature of the suspension that we found pleasing
is that the front and rear shocks can be individually
adjusted to provide optimum performance and plenty
of adjustments for you preferred comfort level.

The
Can-Am Commander 1000 weights in at 1295 lbs
but with its 82 horsepower 1000cc Rotax engine,
the Commander has plenty of power to catch
some air!

To test out the Commander Limited’s new suspension,
we started out with the softest setting and while
it was great for high speed cornering, it was a little
too soft in rougher terrain and caused us to bottom
out a few times. Next we tried the stiffest setting
and while the machine was able to soak up any jumps
or terrain we threw at it, it made the Commander feel
a slightly less stable in the corners, so we definitely
recommend paying attention to where your suspension
is set when going out for a ride and adjusting it
accordingly for the conditions you will be riding.

The
new redesigned double A-arm front suspension
helps eliminate the front end diving when
corning or breaking hard which help the overall
handling of the UTV
|
A double A-arm front suspension design features up
front dive-control geometry, which works to eliminate
diving under heavy braking and rough terrain. By controlling
vehicle dive, the Can-Am Commander handling is more
precise in all situations and terrain types. At the
rear, the trailing arm design provides excellent control
and stability, especially in rough terrain by eliminating
scrub, providing a stable and comfortable ride.
Although this system works well, we hope that Can-Am
opts for power steering in the future as we think
this would be an excellent addition to the Commander
line and would make the machine even more enjoyable
to drive than it already is.
The power provided by the Rotax 976cc V-twin engine
is very good and the Intelligent Throttle Control
system, that detects unwanted bounce and filters the
input for smooth throttle control, worked well, even
at low speeds. While we really like the power of the
Commander, we noticed that when you hit the gas, there
is a hesitation and then a surge on the start, instead
of the expected smooth fuel delivery from the EFI
system, but that is due to the fuel pump placement
on the machine and we are hoping that this is something
Can-Am will work on for future models.
